Dear Families and Partners,

Following Monday's News Alert about the Reduction in Force (RIF) notices at the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) and Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), we want to share additional information and ways you can stay informed and - if you choose - take action.

What’s Happening

As we shared Monday, RIF notices were issued to nearly all OSERS and OSEP staff, with an effective date of December 9, 2025, unless rescinded. While IDEA remains fully intact and students’ rights have not changed, these reductions could affect how federal oversight, guidance, and technical assistance are delivered to states—including Oregon.

How You Can Take Action

Many families have asked what they can do in response. Here are several ways you can take action:

1. Sign the Petition

   The IDEA Preservation Coalition, a collaboration of Parent Centers across the U.S., has launched a petition urging Congress to preserve IDEA oversight and support.

2. Share Your Story

   If you notice changes—such as communication delays, missing guidance, or unclear information from federal or state education offices—please share your experiences with us at program@factoregon.org. These real stories help demonstrate how shifts in federal capacity impact families and schools in Oregon.

3. Reach Out to Elected Officials

   Individuals may contact their U.S. Senators and Representatives to share how IDEA programs and supports make a difference for their child, family, or community.

4. Stay Informed
